India emphasized Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless message on peace in Tokyo. The Foreign Minister of India unveiled a bust of the global icon at Freedom Plaza!
India has donated a bust of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi to Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward, Mahatma Gandhi statue Tokyo, which hosts the country’s largest Indian community of 7,000 residents. The statue was unveiled on Saturday in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The unveiling ceremony was held in a metro green space near the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. Modi pulled back a curtain to reveal the statue, about 2.2 meters high and 1.8 meters wide.
Well, the Hiroshima government accepted the donation of the bust through the Indian ambassador to Japan; the move is in tandem with the city’s mission to promote a “culture of peace,” as Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence and civil disobedience is harmonious.
The event was attended by India’s Foreign Minister Jaishankar, in the presence of Edogawa Mayor Takeshi Saito, Sibi George, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to Japan, and other ministers. A group of schoolchildren also rendered Gandhi’s favourite prayer, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.”
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar calls for peace, echoing Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless message that, “solutions arise not from battlefields but from dialogue”.
Jaishankar said that Gandhi is an international icon; his messages all his life are timeless.
“We have to ask ourselves today, why is it important to have this statue here? The achievements of Gandhi have far outlived his times, but over time, they have become more important. What he taught us, was important then as well as now. I was told that this place is called ‘Little India’. I hope it becomes bigger!”
This is mostly a venue for the Indian community in Tokyo. This will further strengthen relationships between countries and help preach peace throughout the world.
