Rules and regulations
Shizuoka and the nearby prefecture of Yamanashi are divided by Mount Fuji. There are worries that climbers may rush to the Shizuoka side, which has the Fujinomiya, Gotenba, and Subashiri routes, since the Yamanashi prefectural government has decided to impose a 2,000-yen fee for those who choose to climb the mountain on the Yoshida route within the prefecture, along with a daily cap of 4,000 climbers.
Yamanashi: A heritage site
Japan’s tallest mountain, which spans both Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures, was named a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013 and has been a popular tourist attraction nationwide.
Timings and dates
To prevent bullet climbing, Yamanashi Prefecture will also be closing the path between 4 p.m. and 3 a.m. starting this summer. The only people who won’t be able to use the trail during this time are those who have made reservations, in which case they will need to spend the night in huts.
Since visitors will be registering their information ahead of time, the prefecture anticipates that the new approach will help prevent misunderstanding at the mountain entry. Climbers must confirm their climbing date and the number of participants, choose a payment option, provide personal information, and decide whether to stay the night in a hut or go on a day excursion.
Everything will be handled with the use of QR codes.
Reservations for this year’s summer season, which runs from July 1 through September 10, will first be accepted through the system by Shizuoka Mount Fuji Climber Registration System.
