In her 70s, she liked to climb mountains and even climbed Mount Ontake twice, surprising her guide by wearing sneakers instead of hiking boots. At 100, she walked up many stone steps at Ashiya Shrine without a cane.

Tomiko is a mother of three and was born in a year when important events like the first long-distance radio message and the Wright Brothers’ first flights happened. She is the second oldest of three sisters, graduated from Osaka Jogakuin Junior and Senior High School, and played volleyball. She got married around 20 and had two daughters and two sons. During World War II, she ran a textile factory for her husband in South Korea while also raising her children.
