In June 1985, directors named Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki animation studio for producing animated films in Japan. Surprisingly, the studio produced multiple films that fetched different popular awards for their animation style and stories.
Ghibli’s animation films have won the Animage Animation Grand Prix Award, including movies like: Castle in the Sky in 1986, My Neighbor Totoro in 1988, and Kiki’s Delivery Service in 1989. Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2002 and became the first ever anime film to do so.
Hayao Miyazaki’s award winning movies
Recently, another Ghibli Movie stole the show. In 2024, it won the Oscars for the best-animated film category. It is none other than “The Boy and the Heron”. And now the Palme d’Or too?
Studio Ghibli received an honorary Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival on Monday. They had contributed to the genre’s creativity. The studio has reached heights through global hits such as “Spirited Away”. This was the first time an institution received an award rather than an individual in the Cannes Palme d’Or.
Hayao Miyazaki, the popular director of the Studio is going to retire, as per his announcement back in 2013. He appeared in the award via a video message during the ceremony, thanking all the fans. “Thank you very much”, he said in the video message.
Cannes film festival
The festival screened four short animation pieces written and directed by the elder Miyazaki. It aired at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka in western Tokyo, showing clips from “Mei and the Baby Cat Bus” and “Boro the Caterpillar.”
Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki’s son, said, “I presume that the studio has been recognized as a group of craftspersons rather than a business”. He also said it surprised him to see Ghibli films gain such a remarkable following outside Japan. That is why they started streaming in services like Netflix and began distributing them in 2020.
We’re yet to discover how Studio Ghibli continues after the retirement of the main characters, i.e. Mr. Hayao Miyazaki and our popular producer Mr. Isao Takahata. The younger director, however, consoles us by saying, “We’ve taken this award as a message to us, ‘Do a good job in the coming 40 years, too.'”
