Is this a new era for unions in the Asia-Pacific region?
This is the start of a new decade of cooperation and support in the Asia-Pacific region.
Zelenskiy thanked Japan for its “unwavering solidarity” and its commitment to defending international law. It is the very first security agreement that our country has signed with an Asia-Pacific country and a non-NATO country since the G7 Joint Declaration. Such consensus and depth of support are peculiar to Japan alone. The communique outlines the areas where Japan will assist in the long term in the areas of recovery and rebuilding, humanitarian assistance, security and defence, and humanitarian assistance.
What else can be expected out of this union?
Another aspect of the agreement concerns the industries of Japan as a world leader. The two countries will check ways of strengthening the industrial base of Ukraine. It shall occur, in particular, by attracting the private sector, establishing partnerships, and carrying out research work. Japan shall remain a supporter of the Ukrainian Peace Formula as well as sanctions against Russia. Japan will cooperate in developing a compensation mechanism for losses, including through the use of Russian sovereign property abroad, and help to hold the aggressor responsible.
