Does Japan support Palestine?
In the ongoing war scenes of Israel vs. Palestine, many people including children and women fell victim, to Japanese Government support for Palestine. Although millions of people are revolting against the inhuman war, this situation has continued for over 75 years. Tens of thousands of Palestine refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods since the 1948 conflict found their refuge camps with UNRWA.
Recently, news broke out that Japan also stood for Palestinians in Gaza! The Japanese Ministry Of Foreign Affairs revealed that they are working on the “Japan-UNRWA Project Management and Monitoring Mechanism” to collect funds for the unfortunate refugees.
What is UNRWA?
UNRWA stands for United Nations Relief and Works Agency. It works for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East region. The United Nations General Assembly founded UNRWA in 1949 with the mission of offering protection and aid to registered Palestine refugees in the Agency’s area of operations until they find a just and sustainable solution to the country’s misfortune.
UNRWA is largely funded by voluntary contributions and NGOs. Japan didn’t stay behind in this aspect. UNRWA operates throughout the West Bank, which includes East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
What was Japan’s contribution to the UNRWA?
Japanese Ambassador in Cairo, Oka Hiroshi, said last year that Japan has been providing aid to the refugees in Gaza since October of 2023.
How?
Japan has also formed an alliance with UNRWA named “Japan-UNRWA Project Management and Monitoring Mechanism” to raise funds in Japan through various social reforms and events.
In the Financial Year of 2023, the Japanese Government mapped out its goals to send funds and provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the war. It includes a budget of approximately 35 Million US dollars.
Relief supplies are provided to women and infants in Gaza. In the West Bank, the Japanese Government sent medical services.
Supporting vulnerable groups, providing medical services, and offering vocational training are all done in Syria. Japan also provided medical services in Lebanon.
