Japan’s Tokito Oda won a gold medal in men’s wheelchair tennis singles at the Paris Paralympics on Saturday. The 18-year-old defended the title previously won by Japan’s Shingo Kunieda in Tokyo 2021. Oda’s win gave Japan three gold medals and one silver in wheelchair tennis at the Paris Games.
Meanwhile, Keiko Sugiura, at 53, becomes the nation’s oldest Paralympic gold medalist with her stunning victory in women’s road cycling.
In women’s road cycling for physically disabled athletes, 53-year-old Keiko Sugiura won her second gold medal, making her Japan’s oldest Paralympic gold medalist.
Japan’s journey so far
So far, Japan has won 14 gold medals in Paris, surpassing the 13 golds from the Tokyo Games. On the 11th day of the Games, Japan earned two more gold medals, one in road cycling and one in wheelchair tennis. Sugiura also won gold in the same cycling event at the Tokyo Games.
In wheelchair tennis, Oda defeated top-ranked Alfie Hewett from Britain in the final. Overall, Japan has won 39 medals: 14 gold, 10 silver, and 15 bronze. China leads with 216 medals, followed by Britain with 120 and the United States with 102.

On the final day of the Games, marathon runner Michishita Misato will try for her second gold medal in the event for female athletes with visual impairments. She won silver in Rio in 2016 and gold in Tokyo. The closing ceremony of the 12-day Games will be held on Sunday at Stade de France, one of the largest stadiums in the country.
